A wonderful speech by the psychologist Barry Schwartz at this year’s TED Conference in which he – “makes a passionate call for “practical wisdom” as an antidote to a society gone mad with bureaucracy. He argues powerfully that rules often fail us, incentives often backfire, and practical, everyday wisdom will help rebuild our world.”

Some key points in the speech:
Rules create mediocrity.
Incentives reduce responsibility.
No incentives can be created that will work, in fact they demoralize professional activity.
They also create moral loss as well as a loss of morality.
